Paardekooper creates shipping box with good story for State of Art
After Dutch menswear brand State of Art started making its office building and collections more sustainable, it was time for its shipping packaging. The luxury fashion label enlisted the help of Paardekooper, expert in the field of sustainable shipping packaging for retail. By 'subtly simplifying' the current shipping packaging', a new, contemporary shipping box with a good story was created.
Those who previously ordered their shirts and trousers from State of Art, a clothing brand for the 'style-conscious man', could expect an exclusive package to arrive at their front door within a few days. "The packaging really had to be a gift when the shipment was delivered," said e-commerce manager Roel van der Lende. "A fully printed box made of thick cardboard comes with a price tag, we took that at face value."
"So not only did we want a box that reduces costs, but also one that is less damaging to the environment"
Knife cuts both ways
But as during corona the number of online orders gained momentum, the shipping packaging as a cost item got out of balance. It became too expensive. At the same time, the fashion brand had an increasingly strong need to take responsibility in terms of sustainability. "So we wanted not only shipping packaging that reduces costs, but is also less harmful to the environment. That knife naturally cuts both ways," says Van der Lende.
The collaboration with Paardekooper, which had previously developed packaging for State of Art developed, was extended. A logical step, as this independent player is an expert in sustainable packaging and has a lot of experience in retail. In addition, Paardekooper sees it as a mission to constantly invest in the development of sustainable alternatives to existing packaging solutions.
The Porsche among shipping boxes
The more sustainable alternative to State of Art's old shipping box was preceded by a process in which account manager Roy van der Hoeven used the current model as a basis. "That had all the conveniences; an auto-lock bottom, which can be put together in one movement, thus saving time when processing orders, a closure with adhesive strips, tear off strips and return strips, which ensure ease of use for the consumers. The Porsche among shipping boxes, you could say."
In consultation with State of Art, it was decided to adjust the height of the box, which saves space in transport on the one hand and reduces paper use on the other. A simplified type of cardboard was also chosen. The quality now optimally suits the products to be shipped.
"If the box didn't give it away yet, you'll know as soon as you take the clothes out; we really want to contribute something to sustainability as State of Art"
In addition, the box is no longer fully, but only minimally printed, with the look and feel of unprocessed cardboard. This not only gives a sustainable look, but is also actually more sustainable because the box is more recyclable because of the ink savings. Because less ink was used, raw materials were also saved.
Actively involved from start to finish
To ensure the highest degree of quality, Van der Hoeven provided guidance as he is used to at Paardekooper; actively involved from start to finish. For the final step he travelled to Germany, where the factory is located. "At Paardekooper, we think it's important to really take care of a good end product. That means I wanted to be involved in the first production, because at that point we could still make minimal adjustments."
‘Responsible. Together.’
Anyone placing an order with State of Art now can expect a contemporary shipping box with a good story at their door. The message contains more than just the FSC logo and recycling symbol, which indicate that the box is made entirely of responsibly produced paper and may be disposed of in its entirety with the waste paper. In fact, State of Art has in fact also created a sustainable statement. The theme 'Responsible. Together.' is printed in green letters on the inside on the bottom of the box. Van der Lende: "So if the box hadn't already given it away, you know as soon as you take the clothes out; we really want to contribute something to sustainability as State of Art."
