We have to! With an eye on the future, it is important to ensure sustainable enjoyment for our customers and guests. And we can do this with reusable drink and food packaging, or reusables. The new SUP legislation will come into effect this year. As soon as it comes into effect, you are no longer allowed to offer disposable plastic for on-site consumption. Our reusables offer a more sustainable alternative for this. They will have to be washed later of course, because you are responsible for collecting and reusing glasses, cups, plates, cutlery and other packaging containing plastic. The new SUP-wetgeving means you can no longer provide free plastic disposable cups and meal packaging for to-go consumption from 1 July 2023. The consumer has to pay a small contribution for it. And this legislation will also apply to all tableware that you use for on-site consumption from 1 January 2024. You are no longer allowed to offer disposable products unless you ensure they are recycled to a high standard.

For you as a retailer, caterer, catering business, festival organisation or company, this means you are obliged to use reusable cups and packaging. You are also responsible for collecting and reusing the reusables that you provide. How are you going to handle this? Will you take care of the collection yourself, will you work with a circular system or a pool system, will you wash the returned reusables yourself, or will you choose a partner who will take care of this (partially or completely) for you?

A reusable is not disposable

Paardekooper’s reusables are not disposables. It would be a shame if you allowed reusable coffee cups from your company canteen to disappear into the bin instead of a collection system for reuse. And it is not sustainable if you allow customers of your food truck or fish stall to throw away your reusable plastic cutlery after use. You can easily collect what they use on site.

Take care of the collection of your reusables

Make it easy for your customers or guests to return reusable plates, cups and glasses after use so you can clean and reuse them rather than see them being thrown away. For example, you can put a cup collection system next to your coffee machine. Place a sign on the counter asking customers to return their cutlery after use so that you can reuse it. As a festival organiser, you can use a system with drop-off points where they can swap a dirty cup for a clean cup, or they can buy one for a few pennies via a QR code for example. Whatever kind of business or company you have; there are plenty of opportunities.
