Circular cup system at the 4Days Marches
Paardekooper has been a partner of the 4Days Marches for over 20 years. The past five years we have been working together with the 4Days Marches Foundation towards a sustainable solution for the cups used during the festival. The organisation has opted for a circular cup system from CircularPET. We supply the cups for this. These will no longer on the ground, but are returned to the bar and then recycled at a high quality level. Nice and tidy!
"With the circular cup system, we are helping festivals to make their event more sustainable."
Hard cup versus soft cup
"There are currently two options for a circular cup system: reusable hard cups or single-use soft cups combined with a high-quality recycling system," says Dorine Koopmans, Sustainability Advisor at Paardekooper. "Both systems have their own working method and have different requirements in terms of logistics, for example. After intensive research in cooperation with waste processor Dar, CircularPET, The LCA Centre and the entrepreneurs, the 4Days Marches eventually opted for a soft cup made of rPET."
“This is the most feasible option for us organisationally," says Tessa Groenen, sustainability programme manager at ACBN. "(r)PET is currently the only type of material that can be recycled in high quality. We are thus anticipating the upcoming SUP legislation that will be further extended to on-site consumption in 2024. From then on, events will also be prohibited from providing plastic or plastic-containing disposable cups and meal containers unless you ensure proper collection of these products for high-quality recycling."
High-quality recycling
Collection and recycling are arranged by CircularPET Foundation. Co-founder Tjeerd Bijnsdorp has years of experience in organising events and knows exactly what is involved in 'greening' festivals. At the end of June, for example, he organised the circular cup system with CircularPET at the Oh My! Festival in Rotterdam. Paardekooper supplied the cups for this too. Tjeerd says: "We have been working on the development of a circular cup system for years. Whereas the reusable hard cup mainly causes logistical challenges, for the soft cup it was about searching for the right recycling solution. In the end, we managed to create a clean loop. For this, it is essential that visitors are encouraged to hand in their cup at a distribution point. We achieve this by assigning a replacement value to the cup. This can be done in several ways."
Dorine explains, "Visitors pay 50 cents for the first cup and return the cup with a new order. If the cup is lost, they pay 50 cents again. This increases the chance that visitors hand in the empty cups neatly instead of throwing them on the ground. The rPET cups are collected behind the bar in transparent bags. Dar collects the bags and checks the contents together with CircularPET." "For a good recycling process, it is important that there are no other cups in between or, for example, food scraps," explains Tjeerd. "We distinguish a so-called stream of pure rPET, from which the processor then makes new cups again. The bags containing materials other than rPET, are used for more low-grade recycling. No material is lost. We report everything, so that afterwards we know how many cups were actually recycled. These reports are also mandatory from 2024 under SUP legislation."
"Paardekooper is not just another cup supplier, they think along proactively and sincerely to bring things full circle."
Thoughtful partner
Tessa is very satisfied with Paardekooper's role. "The company thought carefully about the wishes of the entrepreneurs in view of the different cup sizes. In order to satisfy as many companies as possible, we opted for three cup sizes, two of which have two measuring lines. In terms of printing, we were thinking of large logos of the 4Days Marches, but on Paardekooper's advice we opted for embossing on the rim of the cup. A thinner cup will suffice for this. In this way we save raw materials and costs. In addition, the embossment is not hidden under the hand when holding the cup. The result is a unique, recognisable cup. Especially this recognisability is important for proper separate collection."
Tjeerd is also satisfied with Paardekooper's role. "They are not just another cup supplier, they think along proactively to come full circle. Increasing sustainability is a matter of pioneering. Along the way, we encounter different challenges, but together we make sure everything is right. In the coming years, we will work together to perfect the system further and I have every confidence in this."
